When a lot of people think of newborn photography, they think perfectly posed tiny babies in beautiful baskets with flowers and fluff and their little heads propped up onto their little hands as they snooze away, blissfully unaware that they're currently modeling for the camera.
For most of my life that was really the only kind of newborn photos I ever saw. And don't get me wrong, it's adorable. A lot of people love that style of newborn photography and there are plenty of photographers who are SO good at it.
But in recent years, another style of newborn photography has been gaining some traction - lifestyle newborn photography. These are not posed photos of brand new babies, but photos of the entire family soaking in their sweet new little person in their very own home. Photos of your life as it is in this brief, messy, beautiful chapter of your story. They're photos you can feel - feel the love, feel the joy, and sometimes even (especially when toddlers are involved) feel the chaos.
This is why I chose this style of newborn photography. When a close friend messaged me almost a year ago now asking if I'd take her newborn photos, this is what I immediately envisioned. And this is what I photographed for her and her family. And I loved it. I loved getting to capture Crosby's older siblings doting on him, and his sweet mama looking down at him with all the love in the world, and their whole family as they enjoyed each others company. And when the photos were all done I felt so proud of them, because when I looked through them, I could feel all that love and joy. And that is what I think newborn photos should be.
The newborn stage is so brief. Before you know it those tiny wrinkly newborn hands turn into tiny chubby baby hands, and then soon they're holding crayons and bike handles and steering wheels, and you wonder where the time went. But luckily - hopefully - you'll have some beautiful photos to look back on that bring you right back to when it all started.
I've photographed dozens of newborns and their families in their homes here in Sioux City, and I've loved every single session. My favorite part about going to my clients' homes for their newborn photos is it makes every session so unique and personal to that family. The colors, the vibe, the feeling you get when you look the gallery - it's their story. The fact that you don't have to pack everyone up and leave the house is just a bonus. :)
